Breast awareness: notice a new change, then act

Know your usual appearance and feel.

Sources checked: 2026-10-18 · General education

A new breast change deserves assessment, whether or not it hurts.

Know what is usual for you

Be aware of your breasts' usual appearance and feel. New changes can include a lump or swelling, skin dimpling, nipple changes or unusual discharge. Many breast changes have non-cancerous causes. Their appearance, size or painfulness cannot reliably tell you the cause at home.

Describe the change clearly

Note where it is, when you noticed it and any other symptoms. Mention previous breast investigations and relevant family history. A clinician may recommend an examination or further tests. A referral does not automatically mean cancer. Ask which screening plan suits your age and risk.
